LIBJAM

While the program is being compiled, we will be libjamming.

Take 3 minutes (and no more) to tell the group some ways that your library or you personally are "getting hands dirty" - it may involve going where the users are, trying innovative service, keeping something that has worked well for years, collaborationg with different parts of the community, putting the library "out there" in the community, trying new tools, stepping outside of the traditional role. 'You can do a PowerPoint, painting, clay modelling, interpretive dance, show a mini movie, act it out, recite a poem about it , just say your bit - whatever.

until recently no web presence, now have 1 wiki, 9 independent libraries so wiki allows them to work collaboratively. Use internal one called docuwiki because can't host anything offsite. docuwiki doesn't require a database in the background. mostly just use it for document exchange, collaborative projects, procedures and reference info, LMS update files and manuals. Also using for tips, how tos, suggestions, product news, minutes. Mostly working well but some issues getting people to adopt it and learn using it and to overcome habit of using old ways.

Watercorp - Emma Taylor (emma.taylor@watercorporation.com.au)

History
I first came across the idea of library toolbars at NLS 2006. One of the key note speakers (Joan Frye Williams) suggested the idea as a way to “put the hay down where the goats can find it, and they’ll follow the trail back”.

What can it do?

Once installed on a computer, the Library Toolbar is a toolbar that will sit in your browser (e.g. Internet Explorer or Firefox) underneath the address bar and provide you with quick and easy links to the most popular library services.

The toolbar can also include a catalogue search box, so that if a user finds a book on Amazon or elsewhere on the web, they can immediately type the title of the book into the library toolbar search box and find out if a copy is held in the collection.

Unfortunately I cannot provide a link to our own toolbar because it is on an intranet page, but you can see how a public library has designed their toolbar here: http://sacramentopubliclibrary.mylibrarytoolbar.com/
You can also add the following web 2.0 functions to your toolbar:
  • RSS reader
  • News ticker (higher interaction levels and keep your users informed with a scrolling news ticker or flashing news notifications on the toolbar)
  • Radio (Allows users to listen to streaming radio over the Internet via mp3/wav and other music files)
  • Word translator (When you hover the mouse over an English word on a web page, Word Translator gives you the translation in your preferred language)

How to make your own

Our Library Toolbar was created using the software Toolbar Studio (http://besttoolbars.net/)

A licensed copy of the software cost us approximately $75 US. This allows you to distribute to the toolbar to 10,000 users.

The software is very easy to use and comes with a wizard - so you can create a basic toolbar in approximately 5 minutes. Personally I would recommend downloading a free demo version of the software and just trying it out: http://besttoolbars.net/products/toolbar/toolbar_developer/

Distribution and success
As yet we have not been able to roll the toolbar out to every PC at our organisation. At the moment the toolbar is available for Water Corporation employees to download from an intranet page  (and of course we have installed it on all the general access terminals in the library).  To date, the toolbar has been downloaded over 70 times and I am hoping that when it hits 100 downloads the toolbar may be rolled out to new users.

ASW's notes: promoting our library with a librarytoolbar that sits just under the toolbar in your web browser, searches library catalogue, quick links to email library and other resources. created using free demo of toolbar creating software called "toolbar studio"

What happened since my last unconference - Hoi (really love to hear about YOUR stories too!!)

Hoi

issues with using free software and website links due to fear of hackers and lack of understanding.
